Old Meets New With This Mickey and Donald Shirt
As someone who has been visiting Walt Disney World for almost 30 years, I have seen a ton of merchandise come and go. One of the most interesting things to do however, is look back at how some of the resort’s gift shops have changed over time. If you look closely at the merchandise, you can often date the photo.
With that being said, I began my Disney adventure in 1990s, where Disney shirts were loud and colorful. There was a lot of color, and it seemed like Mickey and his friends appeared on almost everything!
Obviously styles have changed over time, as has the diversity in Disney’s merchandise.
When visiting Riverside Depot at Disney’s Animal Kingdom today however, I had to do a double take. A new children’s shirt has arrived and while it almost looks like it could have come straight from 1995, something is a little different.
Mickey and Donald Shirt
This white Disney shirt features Mickey and Donald front and center. The duo is standing in front of four colored boxes and pounding it.
If you grew up in the 1990s, you will recognize that four colored box theme. It appeared on a ton of merchandise including shirts, hats, and even autograph books.
What makes this shirt interesting however, is that while the background imagery looks retro, Mickey and Donald are given a modern design.
The duo look like they were lifted straight off of a new Mickey Mouse cartoon and placed on the shirt. In a lot of ways, this shirt feels like the natural progression of the merchandise that we saw in the 90s!
In addition to Mickey and Donald, the shirt features a pattern full of doodles. Outside of Mickey’s ears, the rest of the shirt is just lines.
I really like how this shirt seems to be blending the old with the new. Its colorful, loud and modern. Who knows, maybe 20 years from now we will look back at a photo, and remember exactly when it was made.
Finally, I should also mention that this shirt is sensory friendly. That means this shirt has flat seams, tear away tags, and is magically soft!
