Avatar: The Way of Water Is Now the 6th Biggest Film of All Time
Another day, another record broken by James Cameron’s blockbuster sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.
The film has now brought in $1.938 billion globally, which means it has surpassed Spider Man: No Way Home and is now the sixth-highest grossing film in history.

The $2 Billion Club
The next domino to fall for The Way of Water will be joining the exclusive $2 billion club. When it does cross that barrier, the film will reach a number that only five other films have ever managed.

Interestingly enough, if the Avatar sequel reaches the mark, it will join fellow Cameron films Avatar and Titanic, to make up half of the movies to ever gross $2 billion.
Strong International Numbers
Avatar: The Way of Water has found a receptive audience overseas, where the film has grossed $1.35 billion. That number is good enough for 5th all time. The Way of Water’s return is even more impressive, when considering that the film is not playing in Russia. The original Avatar grossed more than $100 million in that country.

Luckily for Disney, the film is outperforming expectations in China, Germany, France, and Korea to make up the difference.
These numbers are certainly a relief for the mouse house, as the company staked much of its 2019 purchase of Fox on the value of the Avatar IP.

A Domestic Hit
In North America, the film currently sits at number 13 all-time, with a return of $574 million.

Its recent returns helped the film pass the Lion King, The Dark Night, and Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, to reach its current place in history. The film will need to gross another $35 million to catch the next movie on the list- Incredibles 2.
A Bright Future
The sequel to 2009’s blockbuster Avatar has proven to have long legs at the box office, where it has dominated for the last six weeks.

Based on the sucess of the sequel, Cameron’s plan to release a slew of follow up movies is already underway. It seems certain that we will be returning to Pandora soon.
