This Day in Disney History- January 17
Welcome back to our continuing trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- January 17!
January 17th featured the debut of two new EPCOT attractions, the opening of an E-Ticket Disneyland ride, and the christening of a new Disney’s Vacation Club Resort! So, let’s get started!
Construction Begins on Disneyland’s Swiss Family Treehouse (1962)
On this day in 1962, construction began on Disneyland’s Swiss Family Treehouse.
The attraction would eventually open in November 1962, and continue operation until it was converted to Tarzan’s Treehouse in 1999.
Disney’s Vero Beach Opens (1996)
On this day in 1996, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort had its grand opening ceremony.
The first Disney’s Vacation Club resort to built outside of Walt Disney World, Vero Beach offers guests a taste of old Florida.
Katsura Grill Opens (2012)
On this day in 2012, the Katsura Grill opened in EPCOT’s Japan pavilion.
The restaurant replaced the Yakitori House, and was themed after the gardens of the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto.
Awesome Planet Opens (2020)
On this day in 2020, Awesome Planet opened in The Land pavilion at Epcot.
Shown in The Land pavilion’s Harvest Theater, the new film showcased the beauty, diversity and story of plane Earth.
Canada: Far and Wide Opens (2020)
Also on this day in 2020, Canada: Far and Wide opened in EPCOT’s Canada pavilion.
The new Circle-Vision 360 film replaced O’ Canada in the Maple Leaf Mine. The new film showcases the sights and sounds of Canada and is hosted by Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy.
Rise of the Resistance Opens (2020)
Finally, on this day in 2020 Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opened in Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
One of the most complex attractions designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the ride combines a motion simulator, dark ride, and walk-through ride systems to put guests in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.
