Avatar: The Way of Water Pulls in $500 Million at Box Office In Under a Week
Though it got off to a slow start, box office revenue for James Cameron’s Avatar sequel- The Way of Water is starting to pick up. The project pulled in $134 million on its domestic opening and an additional $301 million internationally for a total of $435 million in under a week.
As PEOPLE tells us, this bodes well for the film, which by yesterday (Tuesday evening) was expected to pass the $500 million mark. In comparison, the original Avatar film made $77 million domestically in its first week. However, it would go on to earn $750 million at the domestic box office and $2.7 billion globally.

As of going to print Avatar 2 has had the 4th biggest opening weekend of the year. However, as one of the most expensive films ever made it needs to continue to perform well to be profitable. James Cameron famously made headlines when he announced that the film needs to make $2 billion just to break even. Cameron would go on to joke that he told 20th Century Studios that the film was “the worst business case in movie history,” and that it would “have to be the third- or fourth-highest-grossing film in history” to “break even.”

The sequel features a returning cast that includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver along with Kate Winslet and Stephen Lang. Avatar: The Way of Water follows Jake (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) as trouble follows their family. What lengths will they go to in order to keep their family safe?
