Could Disney’s Woes With Local Governments Be Coming To Anaheim?
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog you’ll know that Disney World has been having some difficulties with the state government in Florida. Disney’s vocal support against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill resulted in backlash from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who is going to be taking the Reedy Creek Improvement District out of Disney’s hands and in the hands of state/local government. Though Disneyland has been exempt from this squabble, they too are being challenged by local government and a potential ticket tax could be placed on theme parks.
According to a recent piece in Fortune.com, Anaheim City Council is proposing a 2% tax be added on to all theme park tickets which includes Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Those in support of the proposal say that doing so could generate an additional $82 million per year for the city. This could be invested in local infrastructure including a second public pool, 7-day library services, a senior center and bringing more police and firefighters on board.
The proposed tax is currently on the agenda as Anaheim is working on the cities budget for the next few years. This proposal is hardly new. Some council members have been advocating for this for years but has come up against opposition from the mayor. However, there’s recently been a mayoral change which means that this proposal could see the light of day!
As Fortune tells us, five or six council members must vote in favor of the ticket tax proposal for it to be considered. The next step would be to have it approved by voters at the next election. Should it pass, a few extra dollars would be tacked onto each Disney ticket. Currently a one-day ticket costs upwards of $160.
