Polynesian Explorers Used Wayfinding Like Moana
Disney’s Moana is a beloved animated film that captivated us with its creative tale and moving music. However, Moana also reflects some historical activity of Polynesian explorers.
Wayfinding the Seas
Did you know that Polynesian explorers actually used wayfinding to navigate sea voyages? This, of course, was before compasses, maps, and GPS.
According to the University of Hawaii’s Exploring Our Fluid Earth, the early Polynesian explorers were some of the best wayfinders in history. They navigated the Pacific Ocean using the sun’s and stars’ positions.
A Glimpse of History
In Disney’s Moana, Moana learns how to use her hand to keep track of the stars in the night sky. We see one form of traditional wayfinding during these moments throughout the movie.
Moana measures the position of the stars in Orion’s Belt, a constellation made up of three bright stars. Therefore, Moana determines if her ship is going in the right direction by using Orion’s Belt.
Then, Maui tells Moana that wayfinding is “seeing where you’re going in your mind” and “knowing where you are by knowing where you’ve been.” Educators believe wayfinding is all about memory because wayfinders must memorize the stars and when they transition in the sky.
Now You Know
So, traditional wayfinders expertly read nature. Hence, they constantly observed the position of the sun, the positions of the stars, and the movement of the ocean. Thank you, Moana, for teaching us some Polynesian history.
