Celebrating 40 Years of Disney’s Incredible College Program
Last year we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Disney College Program. For those unfamiliar, this program gives students and recent graduates the chance to live and work at Walt Disney World. During their time at Disney, they’ll also take courses, network, attend exclusive events and develop their skills as a Disney cast member.
Back in 1981, the Disney College Program only had 300 participants. However, since that time it has morphed into the world-renowned program that welcomes thousands of new cast members each year to Walt Disney World.
The program can even lead to full-time employment. Let’s take the case of 2013 College Program alumni member Jarel Settles. He now works as a program experience manager for the Disney Programs team at Flamingo Crossings Village (which is the new housing community for participants.) “This program truly is a transformative experience,” he shares. “The thing I love most about Disney College Program participants is their energy. I love seeing their enthusiasm as they get excited to experience and make magic for the first time!”
Above is Jaonni Riley, a 2021 College Program participant. She went on to become a professional intern at the Disney Programs recruitment team. “It gives me hope for my own future, being able to see myself in leaders who had beginnings like mine,” she said.
So far, this has been a HUGE year for Disney programs. It’s Disney World’s 50th Anniversary, the Program’s 40th Anniversary and also the first year that participants have moved into the new Flamingo Crossings Village. These new dedicated College Program buildings provide a more cohesive integrated experience. From the moment you step inside Apprentice Hall, the Disney Programs office on the premises, you’ll see a Legacy Wall, a collage-style, display designed to the showcase the history of Disney’s programs over the last 40 years. A lot of the items on display have even been donated by former alumni.
Here’s to 40 years of magic, and many more to come!
