Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story comes to theaters on December 10, 2021. And so, there are plenty of positive reviews from those who have watched it early.

A Beloved Film
West Side Story stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as teenagers Tony and Maria. In this classic musical, they fall in love in New York City in the 1950s, just like the 1957 stage production.

The stage production was by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim. Also, the Oscar-winning film adaptation was released in 1961.
I’m in awe at how phenomenal WEST SIDE STORY is.
Steven Spielberg makes it look easy — but every frame of this film is him at the top of his game.
There’s not a misstep — figuratively or literally.

However, there is an element of the movie inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Hence, Tony and Maria each have associations with rival street gangs, the Sharks (from Puerto Rico) and the White Jets.

Rita Moreno has a supporting role and is an executive producer, and she also was in the 1961 movie. Additionally, cast members include Ariana DeBose, Brian d’Arcy James, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Corey Stoll.
I was hoping that WEST SIDE STORY (2021) would sate my decades-long desire for Spielberg to do a musical. Alas, it is so beautifully shot and staged, such an absolute schooling of the usual musical directors, that I fear I now want him to make two or three more.

Therefore, remakes of such popular movies are a little risky. Shockingly, it may even be a gamble for notorious filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg.
A shocker: I didn’t dislike Spielberg’s #WestSideStory. It’s not a patch on the original (what is?). People’s skin are rendered way too pale. And the VFX is jarring.
