Disney has created a stir this week with the announcement the Disney Genie service which includes a new Disney Genie app as well as a paid service called Genie+ and Lightning Lane. Perhaps not unexpectedly, the flashiness of “Paid FastPasses” – a misnomer to begin with – garnered the most headlines. Many people missed the news about the basic Disney Genie App – a completely complimentary new service that will allow you to make the most of your Disney vacation! Read on for how we expect that Disney Genie can actually cut your wait times for FREE – without you paying a penny for any additional services!

The Disney Genie App will be a complimentary as part of your My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps. Disney explains “The service easily maps out an entire day inspired by the things you say you love – maximizing your park time and your fun.” It is our understanding that the app will solicit your preferences so that if you’re a Princess lover or a Star Wars fan you will be directed toward the experiences that you will love the most!

We expect that the Free Disney Genie App will direct guests to lesser known attractions or experiences they might otherwise miss! Even with the help of a Travel Planner, guests might overlook Enchanted Tales with Belle or Mission Space – attractions that don’t garner as much attention even though they are fantastic! Dispersing people over more experiences will lead to not only more Magical days when a guest discovers something new, it will also decrease crowds at E ticket attractions. Disney Genie will do all of this for all park guests whether you pay for upgrades or not.
Complimentary Disney Genie Helps You Plan Your Disney Day!
The most compelling piece of this new technology is that the Disney Genie will provide updates in real time! Disney refers to a “personal tip board, forecasted wait times… and a virtual assistant.” This means that the Disney Genie app will help direct your day based on what is actually happening in the park while you’re there! Not only will the Disney Genie increase the efficiency of your day for FREE, it will increase the productivity of all guests visiting Disney Parks!

If we take this a step further, imagine all guests at being directed around Disney parks in an orderly fashion based on real time data. Instead of guests planning their day based on a few well known attractions and bottle-necking crowds, Disney will be able to spread people across multiple experiences that will appeal to their specific interests! This alone will likely decrease stand-by wait times!
All Guests will Benefit from Disney Genie+!
In addition, even if you choose NOT to pay to upgrade to Genie+ to utilize Lightning Lanes, the existence of this option will remove people from Standby Queues as they choose this option over waiting in line! People who purchase Genie+ may even move through the parks more quickly and head back to resorts, decreasing overall crowds!
All Paid Disney Genie Upgrades are Entirely Optional!
A point that was lost in the headlines this week is that there is no additional purchase necessary to utilize the Disney Genie app. While some people will be happy to pay to upgrade to Genie+ and take advantage of Lightening Lanes, it is our current understanding that guests may still enjoy every attraction at Walt Disney World and Disneyland through standby or virtual queues.
