Have Your Heard About Magic Kingdom TV Universe?
A series is in development for Disney+ that is actually set in the Magic Kingdom!
According to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is teaming up with Ron Moore (For All Mankind) to develop a franchise set at the theme park. It’s the first project as part of the “Magic Kingdom Universe” and will be called The Society of Explorers and Adventurers which takes place in a world where all the themed lands and characters of Disney parks and films exist in another reality.
As THR tells us, the series is currently in the development stage and sources say that Moore will oversea the franchise. This would be similar to the work he did on Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica and is also akin to the MCU projects already underway over at Disney+
According to reports, Moore is working closely with Disney Imagineers to get the details just right. Inside sources say a huge emphasis will be put on the characters like a sea boat captain from the Jungle Cruise or climbers on the Matterhorn. In addition, we are being told that Maril Davis and Ben McGinnes who are longtime collaborators with Moore are also attached to the Society of Explorers and Adventurers as well as to the larger Magic Kingdom Universe.
Moore apparently signed a multi-year agreement with Disney/20th Century TV for which the creator was apparently offered an 8-figure sum. Under the agreement more and his Tall Ship Productions will create and develop new projects for Disney. The first project will actually be the Disney+ series Swiss Family Robinson which Moore is collaborating with Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) on.
“I decided to go there mostly because my childhood was built around a lot of things that were Disney. I am a huge fan and aficionado of the Disneyland park in Anaheim to the point where I would go there by myself periodically and ride the rides,” Moore told The Hollywood Reporter podcast “The opportunity for me to get to work on a lot of the classic IP that Disney has and things in their library that meant so much to me as a child growing up and that I have shared with my children ultimately was just something I couldn’t pass up.”

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Magic Kingdom Universe which opens up massive possibilities for Disney+. Disney’s streaming network has already unveiled plans to build out the worlds of both Marvel and Star Wars with over a doze scripted series in the works for both franchises. First out of the gate was Star Wars: The Mandalorian which proved a massive hit for Disney+ as well as Marvel’s WandaVision both of which are critical and commercial breakouts for the company.
