Can Orlando Lure Disney Corporate from California?
It says here that “It would make a lot of financial sense for California companies to relocate to Orlando.”
Right here in black and white on BizJournals.com/orlando, they wrote:
In recent weeks, it was revealed Burbank, California-based The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) has been in talks to move jobs to the Lake Nona area in a move some say is about cutting costs. So, Orlando Business Journal crunched the numbers and found that in most categories, the City Beautiful is a better deal for businesses and employees looking to move here from The Golden State.
Fascinating stuff, all.
Orlando vs. Burbank
And the impetus was a story we covered right here on MickeyBlog.com, where the Disney Company was floating the idea of moving some of its corporate offices from out Cali-way to the Sunshine State.
Disney Relocation from California Could Boost Orlando Thriving Housing Market
Of course, dear reader, our first thought up here in New England was, “I don’t care where you move as long as it’s warm…”
But I digress. Pause here whilst I shovel.
Disney Move From Burbank to Buena Vista?
I am back to thinking about this, and Orlando Business Journal Jack Witthaus has a lot of great points in his story:
Corporate relocations: The cost difference between Florida and California explained
On the surface, points that would make sense to an accountant working to help The Walt Disney Company make a case for moving to the East Coast.
Here are a few:

- Florida’s lack of a statewide income tax compares well with California’s 13.3% state income tax.
- Overall, the cost of living in Orlando is 33.5% lower than in Los Angles, according to Payscale.com.
- In addition, the City Beautiful’s overall cost of living is 5% below the national average.

However, one wonders if all of this moving hullabaloo is more about The Walt Disney Company — certainly, one of the most prestigious companies to set up shop in and around Hollywood — might just take their ears to Walt Disney World.
Newsom vs. Disney?
After all, Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t endear himself to Disney’s upper ups with his stance on Disneyland’s reopening.
Of course, the course of the pandemic probably made much of that moot. However, Walt Disney World remains open without [knock on wood] any outbreaks.
In any case, with Disney’s newfound want to be streamlined, fans have to wonder if moving Disney corporate to Florida might not be the pipe dream so many might think it is.
Stay tuned, Mouseketeers. Stay. Tuned.
