New Mutants Pulls In $7 Million At The Box Office In Weekend Debut
If you’ve been following with MickeyBlog then you know that the 20th Century Studios film “The New Mutants” hit theaters over the weekend after a nearly 3 year delay! According to a recent report in Reuters, the title managed to pull in $7 million at the boxoffice. Though this is low by pre-COVID standards, it actually marks the biggest debut yet for a new release during the pandemic.
As of going to print only about 60 – 70% of theaters have reopened across the US and Canada. It should also be noted that many of the country’s biggest moviegoing markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, New Jersey and New York are requiring theaters to remain closed. Also, those theaters that are reopened have placed restrictions on capacity and are keeping space between seats in order to comply with mandatory social measures.
So how is it fairing with critics? According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 34% approval rating with critics but is doing better with audiences coming in at 53%.
Analyst David A. Gross who runs FranchiseRE (a movie consultancy firm) estimates that the film would have pulled in about $14 million had all 6,000 theaters in the USA reopened. “The figure is below superhero and horror spinoff averages,” Gross said. “Still, it’s a positive step for the business following last weekend.”
There were a handful of movie releases out this weekend including Bill and Ted Face the Music and The Personal History of David Copperfield. The Keanu Reeves Bill and Ted reboot debuted on digital rental services and also picked up $1.06 million from the 1,007 screens it debuted on. In terms of streaming, Orion said that it was the No.1 title on iTunes and has generated mostly positive reviews with critics and audiences.
David Copperfield made about $520,000 from 1,360 theaters. Based on the Charles Dickens novel, the movie was directed by Armando Iannucci best known for his series Veep. Fox Searchlight announced plans to expand the film to 100 additional theaters going into Labor Day weekend.
We may see figures for The New Mutants continue to crow going into the holiday weekend next week. Russell Crowe’s film Unhinged continues to perform well. It earned $2.6 million in its second weekend of release which brings its total earnings to $8.8 million.
