BREAKING NEWS: Margot Robbie To Star In New Female-Led Pirates of The Caribbean Film
We’ve got some exciting news for fans of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise! The news just came out that Disney has a female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film in the works starring none other than Margot Robbie.
According to a piece that appeared today in The Hollywood Reporter, the project is different from the already announced franchise being developed by Ted Elliot and Craig Mazin and will be written by Christina Hodson who also penned the script for Birds of Prey.
Details about the script are being closely guarded as the project is still in early development. However, what we do know is that it is not intended to be a spinoff of franchise that has Captain Jack Sparrow as the central character. Rather it will be a wholly original story with new characters. However, it too draws its inspiration from the famous Disneyland and Magic Kingdom attraction of the same name.
Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is apparently attached to produce both the Elliot/Mazin project as well as the Robbie/Hodson project.
As THR tells us, Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most lucrative film franchises of all time, grossing over $4.5 billion on five feature films. However, it has been showing diminishing returns as of late, with 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, coming in with the second lowest box office of the series at $795 million. The studio has been plotting ways to revive the brand.
Hodson is a formidable blockbuster writer in her own right with credits that include the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, as well as DC superhero projects The Flash, which just announced that they will be bringing Michael Keaton back into the role of Batman!
Robbie and Hodson have a long-standing working relationship. In addition to Birds of Prey, they launched the Lucky Exports Pitch Program which is a new initiative aimed at getting more female-identifying writers into studios to write action-centric movies.
