Disneyland Is Expected To Pay Out $59 Million To Its Employees During the Coronavirus Shutdown
With Disneyland shut down for further notice to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the company is still paying the over 31,000 employees over the break. According to a recent article on the Orange County Register, the amount being paid out is an estimated $59 million.
The figure was derived from a recent study by Cal State Fullerton’s Woods Center for Economic Analysis and Forecasting. This was based on the fact that Disneyland Resort paid $1.2 billion in 2018 to its cast members.
By breaking down 2018’s payroll by day, it can be used to estimate the financial impact of this initial 18-day closure. More than 35,000 people work at Disneyland Resort and there are several thousand more who work for related businesses that are dependent on the theme park giant. All in all, Disneyland was responsible for over 78,000 jobs in Southern California in 2018.
The Cal State Fullerton study found that the average Disneyland salary in 2018 was just under $40,000 or roughly $19 an hour. That means that the average cast member will be paid just under $2000 during the initial March closure.
As of going to print, there is no indication on what will happen should the shutdown be expanded into April and beyond. This is a story that we’ll be following closely. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest news and updates!
