Bowers Museum: Inside The Walt Disney Archives
I was there! For about 10-glorious minutes, I was IN the storied Walt Disney Archives.
But it was only the front room and was just passing through on a personal tour from a friend who worked on the campus of The Walt Disney Studios
It was quick, but it was also one of the most memorable moments of my Disney reporting.
However, I really wished I had more time (and access) to see what the archives have to offer.
Now, anyone visiting Disneyland (or Los Angeles area) can have that access I wished for.
From the release by the Bowers Museum:
Inside the Walt Disney Archives: 50 Years of Preserving the Magic
March 7 – August 30, 2020
Coming to the Bowers March 7, 2020, the exhibition Inside the Walt Disney Archives: 50 Years of Preserving the Magic celebrates The Walt Disney Company on the 50th anniversary of its archives, with behind-the-scenes access never before granted to the public.
The 10,000-square-feet traveling exhibit, which premiered at D23 Expo Japan in 2018, will offer several rare items only on loan to the Bowers.
Guests are invited to step into The Walt Disney Archives as they walk through a dazzling display of more than 400 objects, including original artwork, costumes, and props that tell the story of the Archives, The Walt Disney Company, and Walt Disney himself. From nostalgic classics like never-before-displayed sketches for Fantasia and ghouls from the Haunted Mansion attraction, to modern-day favorites like super hero costumes and maquettes from Frozen, this enchanting exhibition is an immersive treasure-trove the entire family will love.
More Than An Exhibition
The exhibition also features special, like a presentation from Disney archivist Becky Cline, a talk with animator Don Hahn, and a showing of Fantasia (1940)!
Not to mention many unique items from throughout the history of The Walt Disney Company.
The Bowers Museum and Gallery Store are open Tuesdays through Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Get directions and tickets via the website.
