Disney’s Lion King Tops $11.6 Billion On Anniversary
As Disney celebrates more than 20 years of The Lion King, Forbes just released a piece detailing just how successful the films and Broadway show have been. Disney confirmed that the box office for the stage version has grossed a mighty $1.9 billion dollars and the movies $11.6 billion making it the most successful franchise in history!
The figures above also include TV Shows, merchandise, video games, DVD releases, and soundtracks culiminating in a massively successful winning streak!
The stage version adapted by Julie Taymore and featuring spectacular staging and costumes will be celebrating its 22nd anniversary on November 13th. Since it premiered back in 1997, more than 25 global productions have toured and the stage version has been seen by more than 100 million people.
And of course, this year also marked the live-action version of the film complete with a brand new Beyonce song. One of the most successful films of the year, it went on to gross $1.65 billion worldwide ($543.2 million of which was grossed in the U.S.A and Canada.) On top of that, the original The Lion King animated film released back in 1994 and featuring music from Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice has made over $968.5 million.
In 2012, The Lion King surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time. It is also the biggest-selling show in London’s West End. Disney says that three productions worldwide have been running for 15 years or more and three others for 20 years or more. The stage version has been performed in nine different languages with shows in more than 100 cities in 20 countries. It has also been performed on every continent but Antarctica!
