Over 500,000 Solar Panels Bring Renewable Energy To Walt Disney World
Nowhere is The Walt Disney Company’s commitment to renewable energy more evident than at the site of Walt Disney World’s recently completed 270-acre solar farm. Adjacent to many of the resorts and theme parks that welcome over 52 million visitors a year, the facility consists of 500,000-megawatt solar panels. To give guests a sense of the size and scale, it is nearly double the size of Magic Kingdom theme park.
The farm is Disney’s biggest-ever solar energy facility and is the second you’ll find on the property. The first was built back in 2016 and spans over 22 acres. The original is a favorite among photographers for it’s Mickey Mouse shape (pictured top.) The new site was build in conjunction with the Reedy Creek Improvement District and Origis Energy.
These facilities are all part of Disney’s continued commitment to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 50% before 2020.
Along with the solar energy harnessed at the farm, Disney is also working with environmental and horticulture experts to ensure that the new plant is a nurturing habitat for wildlife like bees and butterflies. Over two-thirds of this new facility is pollinator friendly and features an environmental test garden.
The company’s longstanding commitment to environmental conservation could offer a whole new world of Disney magic to visitors coming to its parks. It will be interesting to see how these advances continue to grow in the years ahead!
