Disney+ Brings Happiness And Is Good for Your Mental Health
Feeling a little down lately? Isolation and Separation during the Coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll on people. But, a recent survey says watching the positive content available on Disney+ does help with mental health.
The survey, by the Fintech Company, asked 1,000 Americans about how they were attempting to deal with mental health issues exacerbated by the pandemic. Results show that some Americans are spending over $200 a month on attempts to improve their mental health. These are from both direct and indirect sources.
Popular indirect sources include Food and Drink (43%), Socialization (48%), Music Streaming (44%) and the most popular was TV Streaming Sources (51.5%). Direct sources include counseling, mental health apps and exercise programs.
When asked about specific experiences during the pandemic, 1 in 5 people said streaming services, like Disney+ made a significant difference in how they coped with the crisis.
Kristie Norwood, PhD, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist had this to say on the mental health implications of TV shows and streaming:
“Television shows can serve as a mechanism for people to mentally avoid dealing with everyday life challenges, remain connected to popular culture, experience positive emotions, and validate aspects of their lives. Through portrayed character experiences, viewers are able to feel a sense of internal connection, validation and normalization when their personal life situations are displayed; this pleasant connection and gratification often triggers dopamine in the brain which causes the behavioral response of continuous streaming, also known as “binge-watching.”whatsondisneyplus.com)
Disney+’s mission to provide family-friendly, positive, feel-good content is most likely what has drawn many people to the platform during the pandemic. Big releases, like Hamilton, continue to bring families together in front of the television, much like the old “Wonderful World of Disney” shows used to do. Hopefully, these traditions will continue even after the world returns to “normal”.
