Disney’s Incredible Water Artists Bring an Extra Bit of Pixie Dust to the Theme Parks
If you’ve been to a Disney theme park before you know that a great deal of the magic and whimsy of these wonderful lands oftentimes lies in the tiniest of details. If you’ve been lucky enough to stumble upon one of Disney’s incredible water artists you’ll know exactly what I mean!
It’s a wonderful feeling to be strolling through the parks, soaking up all of the amazing sights, smells and sounds and to stumble across a playful image of Mickey, Donald or Goofy made out of nothing more than water. It’s a momentary glimpse of magic before the art evaporates in the Orlando or Anaheim heat.
For Water Artists like Melody Anderson, creating these magical works of art is a wonderful way to add an extra bit of whimsy to your Disney days. Anderson had this to say of her special role: “Disneyland, and everything Disney, started in the heart of that 7-year-old boy who wanted to create something out of nothing.” Like Walt, members of the custodial team will create magical 15-minute sets like the ones pictured above using the simplest of concepts but creating a big impact!
Surprisingly, this is only part of Anderson’s duties. In addition, water artists have normal custodial responsibilities that take up their rest of the day. A select few are trained to take on water artist shifts as part of these duties! The images they work with are specifically chosen through a partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and the Animation Academy!
Water Artists realize that audience participation is a key part of the process so don’t be surprised if visitors are asked to get involved by trying their hand and creating these special designs! Incredible artistic moments like these have been taking place at the theme parks since the 1990’s and take on a variety of different forms from leaves and traffic cones to of course water! Did you know that water used to create this works of art has even been known to come from the melting vending cart ice so that now water goes to waste?

So how do you catch these artists at work during your next Disney visit? Anderson suggests checking shaded spots during summer and also at night. Water artists are always looking for the optimum conditions and the level of heat of the pavement.
