James McAvoy Talks ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and Reveals If He Would Play Professor Xavier Again
Warning: This article contains slight Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers.
True to its advertising, Deadpool & Wolverine featured a ton of cameos and supporting roles from 20th Century Fox’s past.
While fans were thrilled to see former X-Men characters Pyro, Toad, and Sabertooth return to the big screen, one character was noticeably absent—Professor Charles Xavier.
Despite the fact that Professor X’s sister was the main antagonist in Deadpool & Wolverine and Hugh Jackman’s legendary X-Man made multiple references to his mentor, the leader of the X-Men was nowhere to be seen.
James McAvoy Talks ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’
In a recent interview with Variety at Comic-Con last weekend, James McAvoy, who played a younger Professor Xavier in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix (not to mention a brief cameo in Deadpool 2), was asked if he was ever considered for a cameo in the latest Deadpool film.
“No, no, no, no. Not this one. I don’t think so. If there was a world, they clearly threw that idea out the window before calling me, so no,” he said.
While McAvoy may not have appeared in the film itself, behind-the-scenes footage of the actor on the set of the X-Men movies was included in Deadpool & Wolverine’s credits.
“I know, I know! I knew I was going to be in the credits, I demanded. [Laughs] No,” McAvoy explained.
Would McAvoy Play Professor X Again?
Though it remains to be seen what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) holds, with Jackman’s return as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart’s appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Kelsey Grammer’s recent cameo as Beast in The Marvels, the door could be open for McAvoy to play Charles Xavier again. So, would the actor be open to reprising his role?
“I’ve always said, if there’s a good role, if there’s a good opportunity to tell a good story, I’m always going to be interested in it, no matter whether it’s something I’ve done before or something completely brand new,” McAvoy said.
“If there’s good material, I’m always ready to respond. I’m always ready. Ever ready! Actor ready! It’s got to be good, and they’ve got to want to do that, so it’s all hypotheticals.”
At the end of the interview, McAvoy was asked what was on his watch list. His answer was simple.
“I’ve definitely got to see ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’”
