Emma Corrin Explains Why They Joined ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
When Emma Corrin makes their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, they will be playing a different kind of Marvel villain.
For their portrayal of Casssandra Nova, who just so happens to be Charles Xavier’s sister, Corrin and the Deadpool team wanted the villain to have a sense of refinement and charm that is often missing from antagonists.
For their performance, Corrin drew on classic movie villains, including Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka and Christoph Waltz’s Nazi officer in Inglourious Basterds.
“There’s something extravagant in Gene Wilder’s performance,” Corrin told British GQ. “And it’s a similar energy that Christoph Waltz has in ‘Inglourious Basterds’ because he’s wearing a uniform so he can sit there and drink a glass of milk and pretend he’s a fucking fairy godmother.”
Why Corrin Signed On
Portraying Cassandra Nova will be a big change for Corrin, who rose to fame with their performances as Princess Diana in The Crown and Darby Hart in A Murder at the End of the World. So, what drew Corrin to the role?
“I think probably because it is a major contrast to my normal roles, and I always wanted to play a villain. And then Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman,” they said. “Ryan improvs the entire time. And it was kind of like a masterclass in that kind of comedy and that kind of genre of film, which I hadn’t really done before. Yeah, what’s not to love?”
Fending Off Superhero Fatigue
While Corrin has heard all the talk about superhero fatigue, they believe that Deadpool & Wolverine is exactly what Marvel needs right now.
“There’s a lot of pressure on it, but I think that it’s the right one at the right time,” Corrin said. “Because it’s Deadpool, and Deadpool has always broken the mold, right? That’s why Ryan is a literal genius.”
So far, it looks like Corrin is right. With Deadpool & Wolverine tracking towards a record-breaking opening, the film appears to be the antidote to superhero fatigue that the studio was searching for.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26.
