‘Marvel Zombies’ Will Explore New Ground in the MCU
With the debut of Echo on Disney+ today, Marvel Studios has clearly entered a new era.
Not only is Echo the first series to premiere under the new Marvel Spotlight banner that will focus on “street level” characters, but it is also the first Marvel Studios to receive a TV-MA rating.
While other live-action series, including potentially Daredevil: Born Again, are expected to be geared towards a more mature audience, Marvel is also set to explore more adult entertainment with its upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series.
Exploring New Territory
Based on both the Marvel comic book series and Episode 5 of the animated series What If…?, Marvel Zombies will see the MCU expand in ways that it never has before.
According to executive producer Bryan Andrews, the series will veer from its comic book origins and explore new territory.
“That’s going to be crazy,” Andrews said. “Yeah, [it’s] full TV-MA. It’s spawning off of what was done on Episode [105]. The notion was, there’s some inspiration from the comic, the fact that they’re zombies, but we’re not doing the comic, like, in any stretch.”
Taking Inspiration Form ‘What If…?’
Episode 5 of Marvel’s What If…?, titled What If… Zombies?!, explored an alternate reality where some of the Avengers were infected by a zombie plague and the surviving heroes had to search for a cure.
The episode was well-received by fans and critics alike and will serve as a jumping-off point for the new series.
“We have our own take on it, and a lot of that stuff has been set up by our talented [What If…?] writers early on, Andrews continued. “So, just taking that and exploring that mythology in that episode a bit more. So, yeah, it’s crazy.”
Ms. Marvel Will Take the Lead
While we don’t know a ton about Marvel Zombies, we do know that the series will be directed by Andrews and based on a screenplay written by Zeb Wells.
Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani has also revealed that her character will take a central role in the series.
“We’ve done the whole thing,” Vellani said. “It was amazing. It was so much fun . . . There are a lot of cool characters in the Marvel Zombies show. And Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it’s like, ‘She’s basically the Frodo of the story.’ And I was like, ‘That’s amazing.’”
Marvel Zombies is expected to consist of four episodes total. At this time we do not have a release date for the series, it is expected to premiere in 2024.
