Welcome back to our magical foray through the history of The Walt Diseny Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- October 9.
October 9th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured the first ever Disney Channel movie, the debut of a Walt Disney World nighttime spectacular, and the opening of an EPCOT pavilion. So, let’s get started!
The Olympic Champ Released (1942)
On this day in 1942, The Olympic Champ was released.
In the short Goofy tries his hand at track and field.
Tiger Town Premieres (1983)
On this day in 1983, Tiger Town premiered on the Disney Channel.
The first ever Disney Channel television film, Tiger Town told the story of an aging baseball player for the Detroit Tigers.
Wishes Debuts (2003)
On this day in 2003, Wishes debuted at Magic Kingdom.
The new fireworks show was narrated by Jiminy Cricket and the Blue Fairy.
Mission: SPACE Opens (2003)
Also on this day in 2003, EPCOT closed early to facilitate a special press event for the Grand Opening of Mission: SPACE.
On hand for the festivities were Disney CEO Michael Eisner, HP CEO Carly Fiorina, and legendary astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell, and Wally Schirra.
Little Einsteins Premieres (2005)
On this day in 2005, Little Einsteins debuted on Playhouse Disney.
The animated series was produced by Curious Pictures and The Baby Einstein Company.
Johnny and the Sprites Debuts (2005)
Also on this day in 2005, Johnny and the Sprites debuted on the Disney Channel.
In the show, Johnny T (John Tartaglia) moves into a house given to him by his great-uncle, where he discovers magical creatures called “sprites” who introduce him to their fantasy world.
Invisible Sister Debuts
On this day in 2015, Invisible Sister debuted on the Disney Channel.
The film tells the story of a young girl (Rowan Blanchard) whose science project goes awry and turns her sister invisible.
Main Street Electrical Parade Ends Disney World Run (2016)
On this day in 2016, the Main Street Electrical Parade was performed for the final time at Walt Disney World.
The parade would eventually move back to Disneyland.
The Right Stuff Begins Streaming
Finally, on this day in 2020, The Right Stuff began streaming on Disney+.
The historical anthology series told the story of the United States space program.
