August 1st was a busy day in Disney history, with the release of a classic cartoon, the opening of a new Walt Disney World resort, and the debut of the latest Marvel film. So, let’s get going!
Alice the Peacemaker Released (1924)
On this day in 1924, Alice the Peacemaker was released.
The Alice Comedy saw the titular heroine break up a fight between two boys by telling them a story.
Mickey’s Circus Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Circus was released.
In the cartoon, a group of orphans, Donald Duck and a seal wreak havoc on Mickey’s circus.
The New Neighbor Released (1953)
On this day in 1953, the Donald Duck short The New Neighbor was released.
In the cartoon, Donald moves into a home, only to learn tha this new neighbor is a slob with a rowdy dog.
Paul Bunyon Released (1958)
On this day in 1958, Disney’s Paul Bunyon was released.
The 17-minute animated short was a retelling of the classic tall tale of Paul Bunyan and his ox named Babe.
The Castaway Cowboy Released (1974)
On this day in 1974, The Castaway Cowboy was released.
The film stared James Garner, a Texas rancher who is kidnapped, but manages to escape and was ashore on the Hawaiin Island of Kauai.
Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort Opens (1997)
On this day in 1997, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort opened.
Disney’s newest moderate resort was given a Southwestern theme. Disney’s Coronado Springs was also designed to be Walt Disney World’s main convention site, with almost 100,000 square feet of meeting and convention space.
Once Upon a Toy Opens (2002)
On this day in 2002, Once Upon a Toy officially opened in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney Marketplace.
The new Disney store covered a massive 16,000 square feet.
Disney Acquires Club Penguin (2007)
On this day in 2007, Disney acquired the online game Club Penguin.
Originally launched in 2005, Club Penguin had 700,000 paid subscribers and 12 million users when it was bought by Disney.
Guardians of the Galaxy Released (2014)
On this day in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy was released.
The film introduced a new team of galactic superheroes, headed by Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill. Directed and written by James Gunn, the film would eventually spark a trilogy.
O Canada! Closed (2019)
On this day in 2019, O Canada! closed in EPCOT.
The attraction would be updated with new scenes and a new narration, before reopening as Canada Far and Wide.
