‘Haunted Mansion’ Brings in $3.1 Million in Previews
While Haunted Mansion looks to be heading for a decent start, Disney’s latest film will likely be overshadowed, as “Barbenheimer” shows no signs of slowing down.
Disney’s second attempt at a Haunted Mansion film brought in $3.1 million on Thursday, compared to Barbie’s $21.2 million and Oppenheimer’s $10 million.
Haunted Mansion is the latest attraction-based movie from Disney. The studio has had both sparkling successes such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise, and more middling results such as The Country Bears and Eddie Murphy’s 2003 Haunted Mansion movie.
The film is currently expected to bring in somewhere between $25 million and $30 million in its opening weekend, a solid number for a family film. Mansion will likely finish third at the box office, however, behind both Barbie and Oppenheimer.
A Scary Budget
The problem for Disney, as has so often been the case in recent years, is Haunted Mansion’s budget. The film cost $150 million before marketing to produce. With a budget that large, it will have to have an extended run in order to break even.
Directed by Justin Simien, Haunted Mansion features a star-studded cast including Keith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto, and more.
Tepid Reviews
So far, reviews for the film have been mixed, with Haunted Mansion currently holding a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The general consensus is that the film is neither quite scary nor funny enough. Two decades after Eddie Murphy took a crack at the franchise, history may be repeating itself. Click here for our review.
