Tasty Treat: Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce and Bananas
Have you ever enjoyed a meal so much that by the time you get to dessert, you are too stuffed to even take one more bite? Today, we are featuring a dessert that is worth skipping a few extra bites of the main meal! But that’s hard, too, because everything on the menu at this popular table service restaurant could arguably be featured in our weekly Tasty Treat Tuesday post. This restaurant – and our Tasty Treat Tuesday feature dessert – is truly is one of my all time favorites at Walt Disney World! So … where is it and what is it? Let’s check out some … Bread Pudding with caramel sauce and bananas!
What is it?
Bread pudding topped with caramel sauce, bananas and topped with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. The bread pudding is made from cubes of Hawaiian-style coconut pineapple bread which are baked in a rich bath of milk, cream, and eggs.
Why try it?
For bread pudding fans, this could top the list for the best you have ever tried. Honestly, I am not one of those fans. On most occasions when bread pudding is offered on a menu, I will opt for something safe – like chocolate. I often find that bread pudding can be dry if not made properly. Or, it goes the other direction and tastes like wet mushy bread. And who wants that? Blech! Picking the chocolate dessert is a safe bet instead of risking a bad dessert choice.
BUT this bread pudding wins EVERY TIME! Every. Single. Time. The cream-soaked coconut pineapple bread is served warm and perfectly baked with a crispy outer crust and a soft and spongy interior. The Hawaiian-style bread is already lightly sweetened, making for a flavorful base to the more luscious toppings. And those toppings!?! The bananas are fresh and ripe, enhancing the tropical flavors of the coconut and pineapple from the bread pudding base. Although not advertised on the menu, I can taste a hint of rum in the buttery caramel sauce. And everything is better with the heat of rum, right? Just ask Captain Jack Sparrow! Or Trader Sam who has a festive tiki bar next door, by the way. Finally, that vanilla ice cream has a whipped cream texture that melts into each and every crevice when placed over the warm caramel and bread pudding. Your Tasty Treat chocoholic author would pick this dessert every time over something chocolate. It is … THAT. GOOD.
Where can I find it?
This spectacular dessert can be found at one of the most popular dining establishments in all of Walt Disney World – ‘Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. “The Polynesian” or affectionately know as “The Poly” to repeat visitors, features two amazing table service restaurants and one dinner show. ‘Ohana serves breakfast and dinner daily and is a popular option for many visitors to Walt Disney World. The breakfast meal features our favorite Hawaiian friends – Lilo and Stitch – with an all-you-care-to-eat spread of traditional American Breakfast offerings including scrambled eggs, sausages, fried potatoes, and of course … Mickey Waffles! Whereas breakfast is AWESOME, my heart belongs to dinner service which converts to a Hawaiian-themed meal. ‘Ohana means “family” and your “auntie” or “uncle” will show you to a table located in the tiki wood decorated restaurant overlooking Seven Seas Lagoon. If you time it right, you can often spot the fireworks from Magic Kingdom, too. This restaurant offers family-friendly fun throughout the meal including hula lessons, coconut races, and ukulele music. It is a perfect start to a vacation after a long car/plane ride where allowing kids to run around the restaurant is not only permitted, it’s encouraged!
Pineapple coconut bread starts the meal followed by a variety of Hawaiian inspired meats, noodles and veggies. Every bite gets better with each course and the hardest part is staying hungry enough for … yes … the finishing touch. At the end of your meal, that glorious ‘Ohana Bread Pudding with caramel sauce and bananas with a hefty dollop of vanilla bean ice cream melting into each crevice of the warm pudding is placed on your table. It’s time to try it! Did you save room?
