Thor: Love and Thunder Surpasses Expectations at the Box Office
Yesterday, we shared the news that Thor: Love and Thunder was on target to bring in $130- $140 at the domestic box office despite mixed reviews. However, according to a piece in Forbes it looks like the film will surpass these estimates.
The film brought in $143 in its domestic debut meaning that its close to the $146 million launch of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 back in the Summer of 2017. It also means that the film was 2022’s third highest grossing film on opening weekend behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Jurassic World: Dominion.
This is good news for the MCU box office despite the fact that the film divided critics and audiences. It currently has a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes putting it only above Thor: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk and Eternals. It also earned a B+ Cinemascore meaning it joins the ranks of only a small handful of films that earned below and A- including Doctor Strange 2, Thor, and Eternals.
As Forbes reminds us, Thor is the first film to get a part four and it still managed to earn 17% more during opening than Thor: Ragnarok.
For those unfamiliar, there are some noteworthy performances in Thor 4, namely Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster AKA Mighty Thor. Christian Bale also brings in a critically acclaimed performance as Gorr the God Butcher and Russell Crowe returns to the screen as a hilarious Zeus.
Looking further into the future, insiders are expecting a big second-weekend drop for the film but it’s believed the film will still bring in a $335-$350 million finish putting it on parr with Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man : Homecoming and Iron Man. So despite the lacklustre reception with critics, the box office proves the appetite is still there for Thor with the fourth film doing better than the third in the franchise.
So far the film has pulled in $302 million worldwide (19% above Ragnarok in the overseas market.) It opened worldwide this weekend with the exception of France (where it opens next weekend), Russia and China. This is a story that we will continue to follow closely.
