Fun Facts About Disney California Adventure’s ‘World of Color’
If you were following along with us here at MickeyBlog earlier this afternoon you may have seen us celebrating the premiere of Disneyland Forever which returns this evening. But that’s not all! Tonight over at Disney California Adventure, World of Color will once again be dazzling visitors with its awesome water projections. We thought we’d celebrate the return of this beloved nighttime spectacular by sharing some fun facts you may not have know about this production.
Let’s dive in!
Inspired By Wonderful World of Color
For those unfamiliar, World of Color brings animation to life with powerful fountains that create an immense screen of water. The production combines music, fire, fog, laser effects and animated sequences to immerse audiences in your favorite Disney and Pixar films. But, did you know that the production actually draws its inspiration from Wonderful World of Color which was Walt Disney’s first color television series and ran from 1961 – 1969? When creating “World of Color’ at Disney California Adventure Disney Imagineers drew inspiration from the music and kaleidoscopic images of the TV show.
World of Color also starts and finishes with the original theme form the Wonderful World of Color TV shows. This song was penned by Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman.
100 Voices and 100 Instruments
More than 100 voices were used for the World of Color score. This includes both soloists and choirs. There was also a 100-piece orchestra that included 60 strings, 15 brass, 12 woodwinds a harp, guitar, keyboard and synthesizers.
Familiar Disney Faces
Among the characters and stories represented in World of Color are the following:
- Dory, Marlin, Crush and Squirt from Finding Nemo
- Ariel and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid
- Wood and Buzz from Toy Story
- Aladdin and Jasmine from Aladdin
- Belle and Beast from Beauty and the Beast
- Wall-E and Eve from WALL-E
- Simba, Mufasa and Scar from The Lion King
An Acre of Disney Magic
The stage for World of Color which is located in Paradise Bay at Disney California Adventure park uses almost one full acre of engineered superstructure making it longer than a football field.
A Thousand Fountains!?
World of Color features nearly 1,200 powerful programmable fountains! Each fountain has multiple points of control of lightning, color intensity, water angle, height and more. As a mater of fact, the entire production uses 18,000 active points of control to man the fountains. In addition, each fountain can send water as high as 200 feet.
Wall of Water
The production features a gigantic projected water screen 380 feet wide by 50 feet high. That’s a projection surface of 19,000 square feet. Twenty-eight, high-definition projectors are used in the show and 14 of these are submersible!
Reducing Water Wastage
Disneyland Resort has collaborated with the Orange County Water District to reduce water waste in Paradise Bay. Instead of draining into the ocean when the lagoon is emptied, the water is sent through the Water District’s advanced Groundwater Replenishment System. After it is purified, the water is pumped into recharge basins and replenishes the county’s groundwater supply.
See this incredible production in person with the return of World of Color starting tonight at Disney California Adventure in Disneyland Resort.
