5 Awesome TV Programs For Your Weekend
It’s the weekend! And in between squeezing in some last minute Christmas shopping and making those holiday cookies we hope you have some time to sit by the fire and curl up with some of incredible shows on our weekend must-watch list.
We’ve got two must-see movies, the season finale of The Mandalorian and something for the animal lovers with Nat Geo Wild. Feel good family classic The Sound of Music will also be coming back to ABC! Let’s take a closer look at each!
Eddie the Eagle—Friday, December 18, on Disney+
NEW to the Disney+ family library is this 216 film from 20th Century Studios. Directed by Dexter Fletcher, Eddie The Eagle tells the inspirational story of Michael “Eddie” Edwards (played by Taron Egerton.) Edwards was cut from the Olympic ski team but travelled to Germany to try his luck at ski jumping. There he meets Bronson Peary (played by Hugh Jackman) a former ski jumper who works as a snowplow driver and he agrees to start training Edwards. Though his country discounts him, Eddie defies the odds making it all the way to an historic showing at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
Into the Woods—Friday, December 18, on Disney+
We highly recommend having some Sondheim on as you wrap your Christmas presents! This Oscar-nominated adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Into The Woods is NOW available to stream on Disney+. A Fairy Tale mash-up, the story follows a childless couple (Emily Blunt & James Cordon) who have been cursed by a witch (Meryl Streep.) They head into the woods to find materials to reverse the curse where they happen upon Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) and Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) each on their own quests. Christine Baranski rounds out the cast as the Evil Stepmother as well as Tammy Blanchard who plays Florinda. Other noteworthy appearances include Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf, Billy Magnussen as Rapunzel’s Prince and Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince. Lucy Punch plays Lucinda and Tracy Ullman is Jack’s mum.
The Mandalorian—Friday, December 18, on Disney+
Throughout Season 2, Mando has been trying to reunite Grogu (AKA Baby Yoda) with the Jedi. Along the way he reunited with Cara Dune (Gina Carano) Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Mayfield (Bill Burr), Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). He also meets some new characters including Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison.) SPOILER ALERT: After Moff Gideon (Giancarolo Esposito) captures Grogu, Mando will stop at nothing to retrieve The Child. As our hero warned the Darksaber-wielding villain in the penultimate episode, “You have something I want. You may think you have some idea what you are in possession of—but you do not. Soon, he will be back with me. He means more to me than you will ever know.”
Secrets of the Zoo: North Carolina—Saturday, December 19, at 10 p.m. ET on Nat Geo WILD
Check in with the animal kingdom this weekend as the season finale of Secrets of the Zoo takes us to North Carolina Zoo’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Here four orphaned otter pups are about to be released in the wild but first they must pass fish school. Then, the veterinary team is called in to rescue seven huge pythons that are in need of urgent medical treatment. The zookeepers also need to run to the rescue of two artic foxes that have unusual injuries.
The Sound of Music—Sunday, December 20, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC
We’ve got just the thing for family movie night. Showing on Sunday Night on ABC, you can follow this beloved classic based on the real-life von Trapp family who fled their home to escape the Nazi’s in 1938. Brimming with some of Rogers & Hammersteins most popular songs, Disney legend Julie Andrews stars as Maria von Trapp, a tomboyish woman living at an Austrian abbey. She agrees to become governess to the children of Captain George von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) and brings a whole new love and life of music to the family in the process. With songs like “Climb Every Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “Favorite Things” and more, you can’t help but sing along!
