Kevin Feige Says ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s R-Rating Was “Never in Question”
While most fans will have to wait a few more days to catch Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters, the film premiered in New York City last night.
Among the pomp and circumstance, Deadline was able to catch up with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and talk to him about incorporating the Deadpool franchise into the MCU.
According to the Marvel Studios head, it was “never in question” that Disney’s first Deadpool film would be the first R-rated movie in the MCU.

“Bob Iger had said very early on that the other Deadpools were R, so this could be R. And we weren’t going to undo any of the great work Ryan had done in those first movies,” he said on the red carpet. “So, that was never in question.”
The Focus Was on the Story
With Marvel settling the rating question early on, Feige says that the Deadpool team was able to focus on the story.

“So, it all became not about ‘What is the bar of R?’ It became ‘How do we raise the bar with emotion and with character?’ And that’s what all three of these guys [Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy] have done,” Feige continued.
A New Era For Marvel
Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has moved the MCU into R-rated territory, more films could follow suit.

In a recent interview with BlackTree TV, Feige hinted that the studio’s upcoming Blade reboot will also be rated R.
“There were some great ‘Blade’ movies years ago — they were all rated R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade.”
