Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Are Ready For Redemption After Their First Disastrous Pairing
Though much has been made of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman teaming up for Deadpool & Wolverine, this is not the first time the duo has made a superhero film.
That “distinction” would fall to 2008’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which Reynolds played a very different version of Wade Wilson.
While X-Men Origins: Wolverine would eventually be panned by critics and become something of a running joke between Reynolds and Jackman (Reynolds would famously kill his Origins character at the end of Deadpool 2), the film also laid the foundation for a friendship that has seventeen years now.
Working on ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’
In a recent interview with EW, Reynolds recalled arriving on set for X-Men Origins: Wolverine jetlagged and fatigued. After filming a scene where Wade Wilson emerges from an elevator and slashes down a torrent of bullets with his sword, the actor began to come to his senses.
“We finished the day. Everyone was taking all their crap off and getting ready to go back to their hotels. I just, in a cursory sense, said, ‘I wish I had another crack at that elevator scene that we shot earlier today.’ I’m realizing what I could have done, the jetlag is wearing off, and I’m starting to see it,” he recalls.
Pointing to Jackman, he then remembers that “This guy just fired up the lights in there, asked everyone to hop in the elevator,” the 47-year-old continues. “Their willingness to come back is what really spoke volumes about Hugh. There was not even a moment’s hesitation. Every single one of them — including the crew, lighting, everything — hopped to it.”
While Reynolds clearly appreciates the gesture all these years later, Jackman says he learned something that day, too.
“I see it in full bloom. His creative mind never stops and the ideas just keep coming.”
The Team-Up Fans Have Been Waiting For
Since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds and Jackman have been waiting for the opportunity to team up again.
“For me, it’s wish fulfillment,” Reynolds says. “It’s not a secret. This pairing has been something I’ve dreamt about for as long as I can remember.”
This time, they are going to get it right.
“The thing I’ve learned from Ryan is that anticipation of these two characters within this universe: The moment Deadpool came out, I was just bombarded with, ‘When is this movie happening?! It’s got to happen!'” Jackson adds. “There is also the zeitgeist of you and me that exists. The actual onscreen story has to deliver in deeper, wider, more fulfilling ways than what you can imagine.”
“The Movies Is About These Legacies”
According to director Shawn Levy, the connection between Jackman and Reynolds, as well as their respective characters, is at the heart of the upcoming Deadpool movie.
“In some ways, the movie is about these legacies,” he told EW. “That acknowledgment of legacy informs the themes and story itself within the movie.”
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26.
