‘National Treasure 3’ Gets A Promising Update
It has been 17 years since the release of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, yet despite the wait, fans continue to hold out hope for a National Treasure 3.
After 2022’s National Treasure: Edge of History failed to reignite the franchise with an all-new cast, the possibility that Disney would turn back to Nicolas Cage to revive the franchise seemed to grow.

Earlier this year, however, Cage gave an interview with Screen Rant, where he seemed to indicate that Disney was not interested in a third National Treasure.
“Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up, and they go out, and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no ‘National Treasure 3.’ If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there,” he said.

‘National Treasure 3’ Is Currently Being Written
Then, earlier this month, producer Jerry Bruckheimer stated that National Treasure 3 was, in fact, in development.
Hot on the heels of Bruckheimer’s announcement, National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub appeared on the National Treasure Hunt podcast and confirmed that a third film was in the process of being written.
“There’s a very, very good writer writing it right now who tends to write really good movies and if the script comes out close to good and you can see the finish line from where you are we’re making the movie,” he said.
Will Cage and His Cohorts Return?
Regarding the franchise’s original cast, which, in addition to Cage, includes Justin Bartha and Diane Kruger, Turteltaub stated that all three would be willing to return.
“There’s no one who doesn’t want to make it. We all want to make it because we all have tremendous affection. Not just for it, but for each other,” he said.

“The cast really enjoyed making it. We enjoyed the success of it, and would really be fun to go do that again. So, yeah, we all want to make the movie.”
Time Is Ticking
While Turteltaub believes there is still a chance that National Treasure 3 will be made, he is also aware that the team needs to hurry.
“100%. There were no enemies made after these movies. And we do have to hurry because people are both getting older and less interested, and lives are changing and all that. And the world changes. Our culture has changed a lot since the first movie was made. Socially, certainly politically, and definitely our language and different cultural changes and you’ve got to make sure you’re in touch with all that and moving with it and doing things the right way.”
