Bob Iger Says Hollywood Should “Embrace the Change” and Not Fight Against AI
While The Walt Disney Company has yet to fully dive into the world of AI, the potentially disruptive technology is looming like a dark cloud over Hollywood.
Disney, in the past, has caught flack for using AI to create the credits scene for Marvel’s Secret Invasion and de-age stars such as Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. In the larger picture, studio use of the technology was at the heart of last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

At the Canva Creation showcase yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Iger talked about how studios can use AI not to replace human labor but to tell better stories.
“Walt Disney himself was a big believer in using technology in the early days to tell better stories. And he thought that technology in the hands of a great storyteller was unbelievably powerful,” Iger said.

“Don’t fixate on its ability to be disruptive — fixate on [tech’s] ability to make us better and tell better stories. Not only better stories but to reach more people,” Iger said.
“The Wind Behind Our Backs”
While many creatives have attempted to slow the infusion of AI into Hollywood, Iger says the technology is inevitable. The question then is not “if” studios will use AI, but “how.”

“You’re never going to get in the way of it. There isn’t a generation of human beings that has ever been able to stand in the way of technological advancement,” Iger said. “What we try to do is embrace the change that technology has created and use it as the wind behind our backs instead of wind in our faces.”

As Disney prepares to move into the future, Iger will be tasked with sailing uncharted water. To do so, Disney will do what it has done for over 100 years- embrace technology and tell great stories.
