Jerry Bruckheimer Has Talked to Johnny Depp About ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’
The last time we heard any news about the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it sounded like a sixth Pirates film would have set sail without Johnny Depp.
Depp, of course, helped steer the franchise to tentpole status through his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. Beginning with 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Depp would go on to reprise his iconic role in four subsequent Pirates of the Caribbean films, including, most recently, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales in 2017.

Then came Depp’s legal troubles. After Depp was accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard, Disney quickly distanced itself from the actor and unceremoniously fired him from the planned Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

The studio’s initial plan was to depart from the mainline Pirates franchise and create a spin-off film starring Margot Robbie.
The Tide Turns For Depp
In the last couple of years, however, things have drastically changed. Robbie’s Pirates spinoff has been shelved, and Disney has shifted its focus back to Pirates 6.
Depp also won a very public defamation case against Heard, where the actor’s defense team successfully portrayed Depp as a victim, not one of Heard but of an overly zealous Hollywood who was quick to find Depp guilty without trial.
During the examination, Depp revealed that he learned that Disney had fired him from Pirates 6 when reading a news article written just days after he Heard her accusatory op-ed in the Washington Post.
“I didn’t quite understand how after that long relationship, and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent,” Depp testified.

Later in the trial, Depp was asked under oath, “The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?”
Depp simply responded, “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”
Bruckheimer Says He Has Talked to Depp About ‘Pirates 6’
As they say, however, time heals all wounds. In the recent coverage of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, there have continued to be rumors that Disney and Depp would patch things up and pave the way for Captain Jack Sparrow’s return.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer stated that the door remains open to Depp’s return and that he has even talked about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 with the actor.
“If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp… He’s a great actor and good friend… I’ve certainly spoken to him, but we’ll see what happens,” Bruckheimer said.
Will Depp Return?
The Pirates producer’s latest comments are a marked shift from Bruckheimer’s previous comments on the film.
“You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer initially said. “Because with ‘Top Gun,’ you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does ‘Top Gun,’ I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors,” he said in March.

While it still seems unlikely that we will see Depp appear again in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the door remains open.
