‘Spider-Man’ Producers Didn’t Know Who Zendaya Was When She Auditioned For the Franchise
Despite the fact that Zendaya was already a big star when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as MJ, neither Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal nor Kevin Feige knew who she was when she auditioned for the role.
“To be honest with you, neither [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige nor I knew who she was,” Pascal admitted in Vogue magazine as part of its Zendaya cover story. “She was wearing no makeup and she was just dressed like a regular girl, and we were like, ‘Oh my God, she’s amazing. She has to be in the movie.’ And then we found out she was a totally famous person, and felt really stupid.”
By the time Zendaya auditioned for Spider-Man: Homecoming, the actress had already made a name for herself as the star of Disney’s Shake it Up and K.C. Undercover. Additionally, she had starred in Beyonce’s Lemonade film and was the runner-up on Dancing With the Stars. Nevertheless, Adams and Feige treated her like an unknown.
Dealing With Fame
Eventually, the MCU Spider-Man films, which paired Zendaya opposite Tom Holland in the title role, would become massive successes. While Zendaya was already used to the limelight, the same was not true for Holland. According to Zendaya, however, Holland took everything in stride.
“We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight,” Zendaya told Vogue. “One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man. I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”
Will We See a ‘Spider-Man 4’
While both Zendaya and Holland have had nothing but good things to say about their time in the MCU, it remains unclear whether or not the duo will return for a ‘Spider-Man 4.’
“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland said last “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.”
Last year, Kevin Feige revealed that the studio does have plans for a fourth installment.
“All I will say is that we have the story,” he said then. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”
Hopefully, we will see both Holland and Zendaya swing into action again soon.
