‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Almost Had An Even More Tragic Beginning
When Ewan McGregor returned to the Star Wars universe for 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character that he played was a far cry from the confident Jedi Master that audiences had grown to love.
Instead, the series caught up with the former Jedi at the lowest point in his life. In self-imposed exile on Tatooine and cut off from the Force, the series finds Kenobi a broken man.
For longtime Star Wars fans, especially those who grew up with the prequel trilogy, it was shocking to see.
Things Could Have Been ALOT Worse
While things were certainly bleak for Kenobi at the start of the series, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, McGregor revealed that initially, things were going to be a lot worse.
According to the actor, in an early draft for the series, Kenobi was going to be in dire straits.
“The first episode used to start with me as a waiter in a bar. You know, like he’s really lost his way, Obi-Wan. He’s working in a bar, he’s drinking too much, I get beaten up. People are kicking me, and I’m just like taking it, and then starting out, you know, into the night. I mean, that was our first ideas anyway. There was a draft where that’s how it started,” McGregor recalled.
Lucasfilm Made the Right Decision
In the end, Lucasfilm portrayed Obi-Wan’s misery in a more measured way. Obi-Wan Kenobi finds the former Jedi despondent and alone before taking the hero on a redemptive journey.
The idea of a drunken Obi-Wan Kenobi getting into a bar fight may have been a bridge too far for some Star Wars fans. It would seem that the Obi-Wan team made the right decision.
