Welcome back to our continuing journey throughout the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 29.
September 29th was a busy day in Disney history, with the dedication of an EPCOT pavilion, a new addition to a Walt Disney World icon, and the official arrival of Disney Springs! So, let’s get started!
Mickey Plays Papa Released (1934)
On this day in 1934, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey Plays Papa was released.
Directed by Burt Gillett, the cartoon features a baby left on Mickey’s doorstep, leaving Mickey and Pluto to figure out how to take care of it!
Innoventions Opens (1994)
On this day in 1994, Innoventions had its Grand Opening at EPCOT.
The new future world pavilion’s Innoventions West and Innnoventions East replaced CommuniCore, and featured cutting-edge technological exhibits.
The Big Green Released (1995)
On this day in 1995, The Big Green was Released.
The film tells the story of teacher Miss Anna who arrives in a small Texas town from England and starts a soccer team.
The Jungle Book: Mowgli’s Story Released (1998)
On this day in 1998, The Jungle Book: Mowgli’s Story was released direct-to-video.
The film was a live-action sequel to the 1967 animated Disney film The Jungle Book.
The EPCOT Wand Dedicated (1999)
On this day in 1999, the Sorcerer Mickey wand was dedicated atop Spaceship Earth.
The new fixture featured Mickey’s arm holding a wand along with the year 2000. The wand was installed as part of the resort’s Millennium Celebration.
Mickey’s Mouseworks Opens (2000)
On this day in 2000, Mickey’s Mouseworks opened on Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A.
Remember the Titans Released (2000)
Also on this day in 2000, Remember the Titans was released.
The film starred Denzel Washington as Herman Boon, an African-American coach tasked with leading a high school football team in their first season as a racially integrated unit.
Disney Announces Aladdin Is Coming to Adventureland (2000)
Also on this day in 2000, Disney announced that Aladdin would be integrated into Walt Disney World’s Adventureland.
The Magic Carpets of Aladdin attraction and Agrabah Bazaar would open in 2001.
High School Musical: The Ice Tour Begins (2007)
On this day in 2007, High School Musical: The Ice Tour kicked off in Madison Square Garden.
The tour would visit more than 100 cities in its first year alone!
Blue Sky Cellar Closes (2013)
On this day in 2013, the Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar closed at Disney California Adventure.
The gallery would reopen again on April 13, 2018.
Downtown Disney Becomes Disney Springs (2015)
On this day in 2015, Downtown Disney was officially renamed Disney Springs at Walt Disney World.
The newly renovated shopping and dining district featured more than 150 stores, restaurants, and entertainment locations.
Baseline Tap House Opens (2017)
Finally, on this day in 2017, BaseLine Tap House opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The new microbrewery was designed to represent Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles.
