‘The Little Mermaid’ Producers Sued Over On-Set Injury
A Disney-owned production company is in hot water after a special effects artist says she was injured on the set of The Little Mermaid.
Christine Overs, who specializes in making beach and snow sets, says she was sculpting a lagoon scene for the live-action remake when she fell from a polystyrene step onto a concrete floor and broke her wrist.
Overs said the fall occurred because the production company had failed to “provide any adequate access to the set.” She is seeking $190,000.
Sandcastle Pictures Admits Liability
According to the Time of London, Sandcastle Pictures, the Disney-owned production company responsible for the shoot, has admitted liability for the fall. They are, however, disputing the amount that Overs is seeking.
Overs told the Central London county court that the accident, which occurred at Pinewood Studios in October 2020, required surgery and the insertion of steel pins into her arms.
Ongoing Issues
Given that her profession requires fine finger movements, Overs, 74, argues that the accident has ruined the final year of her career.
She has previously worked on films including Dune, Alien, and Superman IV, and was formerly a member of Jim Henson’s creature workshop.
Additionally, Overs says the incident left her with a “substantial level of disability.” She also reportedly still suffers from pain, disturbed sleep, and swelling. Additionally, Overs claims that she has trouble with simple tasks such as using a zipper or button.
The Little Mermaid starred Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy and was released in May of this year.
