Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney history. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 17.
June 17th was a busy day in Disney history with the release of a Mickey cartoon, the debut of a Disneyland parade, and the opening of a new EPCOT attraction!
Mickey’s Mechanical Man Debuts (1933)
On this day in 1933, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Mechanical Man debuted.
In the cartoon, Mickey builds a robot named Champ, who is entered into a prize fight against Beppo the Gorilla.
Polar Trappers Released (1938)
On this day in 1938, Polar Trappers was released.
The cartoon featured Goofy, Donald attempting to trap seals in Antartica!
Main Street Electrical Parade Debuts (1972)
On this day in 1972, the Main Street Electrical Parade kicked off in Disneyland.
Floats in the procession included the Casey Junior Circus Train, Dumbo’s Circus, Cinderella’s Ball, Alice in Wonderland, the Blue Fairy, Chinese Dragon, “it’s a small world”, and the American Finale.
Benji the Hunted Released (1987)
On this day in 1987, Benji the Hunted was released.
The film told the story of a courageous dog drying to survive in the wilderness after he separated from his trainer.
Disney Sends Animators To China (1994)
On this day in 1994, Disney sent animators to China to gather information for the upcoming animated feature film based on The Legend of Mulan.
The team would visit visit Datong, Luoyang, Xian, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, and Guilin.
Even Stevens Debuts (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Channel original series Even Stevens debuted.
The sitcom followed the story of Stevens family from suburban Sacramento. The show focused on the clashing personalities of the younger siblings Red (Christy Carlson Romano) and Louis (Shia LeBeouf).
The Buzz On Maggie Debuts (2005)
On this day in 2005, The Buzz on Maggie debuted on the Disney Channel.
The series followed the adventures of Maggie Pesky, a fly who dreams of becoming a rock star.
Toy Story Mania Opens (2008)
On this day in 2008, Toy Story Mania celebrated its Grand Opening at Disney’s California Adventure.
The interactive attraction takes guests through a series of Midway-style arcade games.
Finding Dory Released (2016)
On this day in 2016, Finding Dory was released to theaters.
A sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo”, the film focused on the adventures of the popular amnesiac fish.
Soarin’ Around the World Debuts (2016)
Also on this day in 2016, Soarin’ Around the World debuted at EPCOT.
An updated version of the original Soarin’, the attraction now takes guests on tour of world landmarks.
Inner Workings Premieres (2016)
Also on this day in 2016, Inner Workings premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
The cartoon combined hand drawn animation and CGI to create a unique animation style.
Amphibia Debuts (2019)
On this day in 2019, Amphibia debuted on the Disney Chanel.
The series centers on a 13-year-old girl who is transported to the magical world of Amphibia after stealing a music box.
