One Avenger Teased That Robert Downey Jr. Could Return to the MCU
Avengers: Endgame not only ended the Thanos storyline that loomed over Marvel’s first three phases, but it also marked the end of two popular Avengers.
In the film, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man sacrifices himself to save the galaxy one last time, while Steve Rogers passes on the shield and heads back in time to live with Sharon Carter.

While both endings fit well within the overall MCU story and featured poignant farewells for two of the original Avengers, fans have continued to hope that the two heroes could somehow return to the fold in the future.
Is Iron Man “Off the Table?”
Previously, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development emphatically stated that a return of Iron Man or Captain America was “off the table.”

Following online clamor for the heroes to return, Broussard said:
“Well, I think one of the meta-narratives of Phase Four was about new characters. It was about new people stepping into mantles. If you look at, like, Cassie [Lang in Quantumania] getting a suit and Kate Bishop [in Hawkeye], new characters being introduced like Jack in Werewolf by Night.
“After these first 10 years of Marvel storytelling, torches are being passed, like with Robert Downey Jr. no longer being [on the] table and stuff like that. So it was kind of like a new generation stepping to the forefront which, again, has always happened in the comics.”

Despite statements such as these, speculation has continued to run rampant. Now, a fellow Avenger is fueling the fire by stating that “anything is possible.”
The Hulk Weighs In
At the Emerald City Comic-Con’s “Mean and Green: Mark Ruffalo Spotlight” panel, the Hulk actor was asked how it felt to lose Downey Jr. and Chris Evans from the MCU.

“Sad, but there is a time machine. And there are alternate universes and realities, so anything could happen,” Ruffalo responded.
When asked to clarify if he was hinting that Iron Man and Captain America could return, Ruffalo was coy.

“[Laughs, looks at the ceiling] Are one of these boards going to fall on me? Man, are you trying to get me in trouble again? I’m not going to say it’s not possible, but I’m not going to say it is.”
Ruffalo has a long history of accidentally spoiling Marvel’s plans, so the actor seemed extra careful about not giving anything away.
Wait and See
Regardless of what anybody says, speculation of about Downey and Evans returning to the MCU will likely continue until Avengers: Secret Wars. But as Ruffalo said, anything could happen.
