This Day in Disney History- February 20
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 20.
February 20th featured the release of a Mickey cartoon, the birth of Imagineering, and the debut of a new Haunted Mansion prop.
Africa Before Dark Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit silent cartoon Africa Before Dark was released.
In this silent cartoon, Oswald is a big game hunter who visits Africa.
Moose Hunters Released (1937)
On this day in 1937, Moose Hunters was released.
Directed by Ben Sharpsteen, Mickey and Donald and Goofy get themselves in trouble when they go out to the woods to hunt.
Aquamania Released (1961)
On this day in 1961, Aquamania was released.
In this short, Goofy buys a boat and inadvertently enters a water skiing race.
Beyond Which Mountain Airs (1982)
On this day in 1982, Beyond Witch Mountain aired.
A sequel to the 1975 Disney film Escape to Witch Mountain, the filmed starred Eddie Albert as Jason O’Day.
WED Enterprises Become Walt Disney Imagineering
On this day in 1986, WED Enterprises was renamed Walt Disney Imagineering.
WED was initially created in 1952 to oversee the desin of Disneyland. The name Imagineering was originally coined by Richard F. Sailer before being adopted by Disney.
Disney and AT&T Announce Indiana Jones Ride (1995)
On this day in 1995, Disney and AT&T announced that they would be creating the Indiana Jones Adventure for Disneyland.
The thrill ride would eventually open on March 4, 1995 as Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
Madame Leota’s Tombstone Comes to the Haunted Mansion (2002)
On this day in 2002, a new tombstone was placed in the Haunted Mansion’s graveyard at Walt Disney World.
The new headstone was dedicated to Madame Leota, who guests see inside the attraction. It reads “Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all, in regions beyond now, but having a ball”.
Confession of a Teenage Drama Queen Released (2004)
Finally, on this day in 2004, Confession of a Teenage Drama Queen was released.
The film starred Lindsay Lohan as a teenage girl named Lola who dreams of being a Broadway star.
