This Space Mountain Pin Features Nipper the Dog!
Before we get into the new pin that arrived at Walt Disney World, we have to talk a little Disney history.
For those of you not old enough to remember, when Space Mountain originally opened in 1975, it was sponsored by RCA.
As part of the sponsorship of the attraction, RCA’s mascot, Nipper was included in the attraction’s queue.
That’s right, when guests entered Space Mountain from 1975 until 1994, they were greeted by Nipper, who was sitting in a flying-saucer listening to his iconic gramophone.

Nipper the Robot-Dog
When FedEx assumed sponsorship of the attraction in 1994, something slightly disturbing happened. The Nipper Audio-Animatronic lost its “fur”, and was transformed into Nipper the Robot-Dog.
Although FedEx has come and gone, you can still see Nipper in his robot form inside the attraction. He is now located in the post-show vignette featuring “Crater Caverns”.

All of this is to say, that Nipper is truly one of the Magic Kingdom’s iconic characters, even if he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
A New Nipper Pin!
This brings us to our trip to Disney Springs today. When visiting the Pin Traders shop, we came upon a new Space Mountain pin that features Nipper!
In this pin, Nipper, in his robotic form, sits next to saluting Stitch.
The duo appear to be standing in front of Space Mountain’s command center, which guests can see in the queue.
Here is a closer look at the pin design.
This pin is a great release for Space Mountain. I would love to see Nipper featured more prominently in the attraction’s merchandise. After all, he has been there since the very beginning.
