A Vegetarian’s Review of Flavors of the Medina- 2022 Food and Wine Festival
Tangerine Cafe is once again serving as Morocco’s Festival booth during the 2022 Food and Wine Festival! With the ability to utilize the restaurant’s ceramic oven and grills, the food from this Festival booth has always been one of the best.
In 2022, the booth is featuring two vegetarian and vegan-friendly options and we had to try them out for ourselves! How did they rank among the dozens of other Festival booths? Read on to find out!
Fried Falafel Pita
For a Festival dish, this one was very filling! Two pieces of fried falafel are served in a warm pita that’s topped with a vegan tahini.
While it may not appear so, this dish is very approachable for someone who’s new to Mediterranean flavors. While I could taste the spices used in the falafel, it was in no way spicy or heavily spiced.
The result is a hush puppy-like falafel that has a nice crunch on the outside that gives way to a soft center. I overall found this dish to be a little dry and in need of more sauce, but it had nice flavor and is definitely a good one to try for less adventurous eaters.
Stone Baked Moroccan Bread
The chef’s ability to use the ceramic oven in Tangerine Cafe is what makes this entire dish. The breads are actually fired in the oven right before your eyes, so the result is a piping hot, super-soft round mini loaf sized for one!
Pillowy and easy to rip apart, I would call the bread the crowning glory, but I cannot in good conscience discount any one of the three dips! Hummus, zhoug, and a chermoula dip round out this offering, and each one is uniquely delicious and fresh.
I would highly recommend this dish- and this booth- to any vegetarian visiting the Food and Wine Festival in 2022!
