Lion King Show Will Make Its Disneyland Debut This Summer
Staring this Summer, visitors to Disneyland will be able to check out a new “Lion King” musical stage show which will take place at the Fantasyland Theatre. This is according to a recent piece in the Orange County Register that is based off of a recent casting calls for the project.
According to the piece, Disney is looking for vocalists for the African lion roles of Simba, Nala, Mufasa and Scar. Other roles include Pumbaa (warthog), Timon (meerkat) and the hyenas Banzai and Shenzi. Casting is also being done for an earth mother type character named Mwongozo which means “guide” and will serve as the show’s narrator.
In addition to casting the lead roles, Disneyland is also look for dancers that can sing as well as drummers that are skilled in djembe, dundun, shakers and other West African percussion techniques. The casting call advises that they are looking for vocalists, dancers and drummers of all genders, abilities, types and ethnicities that can represent the culture and heritage of Africa.
If “Tale of the Lion King” sounds familiar as a title, the show previously ran at Paradise Bay before it closed due to the pandemic. The previous show featured 18 performers by the OC Register advises that the new ensemble may be larger to accommodate the Fantasyland Theatre.
The previous production was created as a tie-in for the live-action The Lion King which had just come out as well as to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the film.

The Tale of the Lion King will feature numbers from the original score as well as new compositions. It will also feature a percussion-focused soundtrack performed by a troupe of drummers.
Before the new Lion King show opens at the Fantasyland Theatre, Celebrate Gospel will first take to the stage on select dates in February and will be the first performances in the space since the pandemic.
