BREAKING NEWS: Major Renovation Coming to Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort
If you’ve been following along with us here at MickeyBlog you’ll know that this year’s D23 Expo has officially kicked off at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. Disney Chairman Josh D’Amaro gave a presentation revealing all of the exciting changes coming to the theme parks in the months and years ahead and chief among them was the announcement that Downtown Disney will be getting a major refurbishment!
We know know that the AMC Theater and the Earl of Sandwich shop will be demolished and that a mid-century modern-designed addition to the district will be added near Disneyland theme park.
Check out the official tweet from Disney below!
At @Disneyland Resort, the next evolution of Downtown Disney District is being planned with work starting in January 2022. The multi-year project to reimagine Downtown Disney District will include an even broader collection of shopping, dining & entertainment experiences. pic.twitter.com/c4psjGbzbe

The list of locations that will need to close to make way for the development shared above includes the following:
- Earl of Sandwich
- Sugarboo
- Starbucks (West End)
- AMC Theaters
D’Amaro also advised that the new Downtown Disney refurb will take place in the area that Disney had previously singled out as the location for a fourth Disneyland hotel project. However this was canceled back in 2018.
Interestingly enough, the former ESPN Zone and Rainforest Café building (which has been repurposed as the Star Wars Trading Post) were not included in the redevelopment discussion.

Star Wars Trading Post at Downtown Disney District in Anaheim, California, is the go-to place for all things Star Wars. The design is inspired by a hidden jungle Resistance base and the merchandise offers something for every traveler on their galactic journey. Here, guests will find a number of goods, including a Paddy Frog light-up sipper and Child-inspired streetwear collection, including t-shirts, leggings, hats and more inspired by “The Mandalorian” series on Disney+. As the OC Register points out, the renovation project is expected to bring new shopping, dining and entertainment offerings to Downtown Disney.
We are expecting more details regarding this exciting redevelopment to be announced in the days and weeks ahead! In the meantime readers are encouraged to keep following along with us for further news and updates.
