Disney Closing Down 100 International TV Channels
Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, announced on Monday that Disney will be closing down 100 international television channels.
The announcement came during the 49th annual J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media, and Communications Conference.
The news comes a year after Disney shut down over 30 international channels to focus more on their streaming platform. During the conference, Chapek said:
“The great majority of that content will migrate to Disney+. That continues to be a core strategy for us as we pivot toward direct-to-consumer.”
Disney+ has been rolling out in several countries over the past year. Disney pulled the plug on The Disney Channel in the U.K. and added the addition of Star to their Disney+ international offerings.
Meanwhile in India, their streaming service, Disney+ Hotstar, makes up 30% of Disney+’s total subscribers worldwide. Prior to yesterday’s announcement, Disney had disclosed in April that they will be shutting down several of its sports channels in Asia.
During Monday’s conference, Bob Chapek also discussed technology in the theme parks, park reservations, virtual queues, and park capacity numbers. Readers are encouraged to keep following MickeyBlog for updates.
