Using Solar Energy To Power Disney Parks
Happy Earth Day Disney friends! We here at MickeyBlog thought what better way to celebrate the planet this morning then by sharing some of the incredible ways that Disney uses Solar Energy to bring power to their theme parks around the globe. It’s pretty darn awesome.
Disney is continuing to improve on its commitment to reduce their carbon footprint and their are new solar facilities springing up to help the company continue to reach that goal.
Just check out the video below:
The use of solar energy is not new but Disney’s innovations when it comes to powering the parks definitely is! The company is constantly pushing the boundaries of solar energy in unique ways. The includes the use of solar panels atop attractions at Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, and even a Mickey Mouse shaped Solar Farm in Florida.

We are also pleased to announce that solar canopies are currently in development in Disneyland Paris that will provide shelter to 9,500 guest vehicles! Disney is also working on a solar facility designed to power 70% of Disney Cruise Line’s private island Castaway Cay in the Bahamas and two NEW solar facilities are coming to Central Florida in the near future.
Currently, Disney generates enough solar power around the world to power 8 Magic Kingdom theme parks! Pretty impressive right!? Let’s take a look specifically at how Disney uses solar power at different destinations around the world:
Disney Castaway Cay
Powering ~70% of the island’s power, Disney Cruise Line will soon bring online 4,320 solar panels at Disney’s Private Island in the Bahamas- Castaway Cay.
Walt Disney World
Disney World has been using solar energy for years now and as of today, Disney World and Reedy Creek Improvement District are teaming up with local utility partners to develop two NEW 75MV solar p9ower facilities. These additional locations are expected to begin offering solar power in the next two years!
And let’s not forget that Walt Disney World is also home to a not-so-hidden Mickey solar array that was build in collaboration with RCID and Duke Energy. The facility spans across 22 acres of land! There is also a massive 270 acre 57MW solar facility that was built in partnership with RCID and Origis Energy USA. These two facilities combines produce enough renewable energy to power 40% of Walt Disney World’s total energy consumption!
Disneyland Paris
Disneyland Paris is doing something so interesting and setting the standard for solar energy in Europe! They are working on one of the largest solar canopy plands in collaboration with Urbansolar. The canopies will utilize 67,500 panels which site atop an outdoor guest parking lot.
Hong Kong Disneyland
Hong Kong Disneyland serves as the home to the single largest solar panel site in Hong Kong. The project spans across 20 attractions and buildings and consists of over 5,000 solar panels!
Disneyland Resort
Did you know that Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park is actually home to 1,400 solar panels? They sit atop the attraction and help power Disneyland Resort!
Tokyo Disney Resort
Tokyo Disney Resort generates enough solar energy to fuel the iconic Dreamlights Parade with solar panels installed at eight backstage locations across the resort property!
Disney has a long-term goal of reaching net zero greenhouse emissions. You can check out more details on their new set of ambitions goals here. Disney is committed to reaching zero emissions by 2030.
