According to Local 737 Disney is beginning to reach out to staff members to notify them of Layoffs as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog then you know Disney Chairman Josh D’Amaro published a statement announcing that 28,000 employees at Disney’s domestic theme parks would be let go as a cost-cutting measure.
The union published a copy of the letter being sent out to those impacted by the closure which you can see below:
As you can see from letter cast members impacted by the layoffs will go into effect on December 31, 2020. Local 737 posted the letter on Facebook and took the time to clear up some confusion employees had regarding the letter. You can see the post in its entirety below.
According Local 737, a blanket letter was sent out to all employees even those union employees that would be protected from layoffs due to their union agreement with Disney. As Unite Here! explains, “Any workers represented by the Union maintain their right to come back to work by seniority as business increases. This right to return is called your “recall rights” and it is documented in a written contract between the Union and Disney that you can see at UniteHereLocal737.org.”
The union goes to say that their members are protected through October 1, 2022 at which point further negotiations will be required of all employees have not returned to work. Unfortunately, non-union employees do not have recall rights and may be permanently laid off as a result.
If you are a Disney cast member and have questions regarding the information above, please reach out to your union representative for further assistance.
