Could Disney Take Gatorland’s Lead and Introduce a Social Distancing Yeti!?
In a move that is equal parts disturbing and genius, Gatorland in Orlando has come up with an intriguing way to ask guests to social distance but in a fun, friendly way that’s unlikely to provoke guests.
I give you Skunk Ape! Yup, that’s right a social distancing ape who will now be on hand at Gatorland to mingle with guests while reminding them of the importance of social distancing.
We first got a glimpse of this mythical creature in an intro video that Gatorland recently posted on YouTube to introduce the park’s new social distancing guidelines. Let’s take a look:
On the surface, this may seem kind of bizarre but at the same time, we absolutely get the logic of this. In a time where tensions are starting to mount, and people are becoming reluctant to follow social distancing guidelines having a friendly, playful man in a gorilla suit tell you to put a facemask on is less likely to provoke a disgruntled guest than having an exhausted employee do the same.
Already this week, during our visit to Disney Springs we have seen numerous guests without facemasks or that aren’t adhering to social guidelines. Would having a friendly mascot as an enforcer help the process?
Here’s another video that was recently shared on TMZ about how the Social Distancing Skunk Ape delivers his message. Check out the first few minutes of the video here:
With Disney yet to announce their opening date and with rules proving difficult to enforce at Disney Springs, maybe doing something a bit tongue-in-cheek is just approach needed right now.
And let’s be honest. Disney has no shortage of characters that could be used. Let’s start with the obvious choice:
How about the Social Distancing Yeti from Expedition Everest!? After all, it might give him something to do since he’s never really “working.” What do you think about Swampland’s measures? Do you think it’s perfect for easing social distancing tensions or just plain odd?
