Disney is Planning 60 Halloween Shorts for October
Since new films for this summer are questionable, let’s look ahead to the fall. Especially, Halloween. The Walt Disney Company is planning a series of Halloween Horror shorts to air on HULU, ABC, Freeform and FX. All Disney digital broadcasting outlets.
There will be 60 “genre-bending” shorts created by emerging film makers. This short series is being resurrected for Halloween 2020. The originals aired in 2017. The new series will begin in late September and air through Halloween.
“We are seeing so much energy in the short form horror genre and we are excited to provide a world platform for a community of emerging new filmmakers. This process will provide the necessary funding to support creative storytellers and give them the resources needed to realize their vision,” said David Worthen Brooks, executive VP of 20th Digital Studio.(source:broadcastingcable.com)
The winning shorts were chosen from over 1,000 entries and over 250 film makers. There were several criteria, but appeal to advertisers was at the top of the list. The 2017 winning shorts were aired during high profile shows like FX’s American Horror Story, Fox’s Ghosted and the Major League Baseball playoffs. Media where the viewing numbers were high and attracted advertising.
Also in 2017, the Mars company sponsored four shorts that won awards at the 2018 Brand film festival. The four award winning films that were created for Mars are M&M’s The Road, directed by Jack Bishop and Justin Nijm; Snickers’ Live Bait, directed by Andrew Laurich; Starburst’s The Replacement, directed by Chris Leone; and Skittles’ Floor 9.5, directed by Toby Meakins.(Source:broadcastingcable.com)
Disney is definitely not known for the horror genre, but Halloween itself is a big draw for fans who like all things scary. It is a “short” wait until October to see how truly scary these mini-films are.
